Empire of the Sun album art.

Another reason to get excited about the release of Empire of the Sun's album is the art. On September 8th EMI music unleashed the album art on Empire of the Sun's home page HERE.

As you can see it is a beautiful painting featuring Nick Littlemore (shaggy, brunette) and Luke Steele (face paint).

It is based on the movie posters of Indiana Jones and Star Wars. If that's anything to go by it does conjure up images of grand, epic and break through musical landscapes.

I can almost feel the nervous tension rise as EMI pump out excited press releases and blog after blog post their scribblings about it.

I do not know who painted it if anyone knows please let me know? It would be awesome to check out their other work.

I hope this is released in 12" vinyl....

Empire of the Sun

What do you think you'd get if you took Pnau and mixed it with the Sleepy Jackson? If you haven't already heard Luke Steele has snatched up Nick Littlemore from Pnau and together they have created Empire of the Sun.

oriental dress and face paint the future of Australia's music scene?

If you haven't heard Empire of the Sun yet definitely check out their video clip on youtube. clicky. It has been uploaded in High Definition because it is such a feast of colours it'd be a pity to see it in any other format. It shines out, spliced with glowing orbs and face paint, making all the other posts look somewhat monochromatic. It was shot on location at Shanghaii which is where the famous novel and movie that the band take their name from is set.

Personally I believe that both Nick and Luke are inspirational musical figures and the gelling of these two has made this little blogger very very excited. Just quietly I have a bit of a crush on Nick and stumbled across these guys after a late night google mission. Thank god for google.

Nick's smooth voice balances out Luke's jolty singing. It definitely feels like a summer anthem in the making, light and fluffy I can't wait to hear what the rest of the album sounds like. But beware it is highly addictive as it is soo catchy!

There is not very much info on the band available yet, their website includes the song, lyrics and a free download of a remix done by Nick's brother Sam La More. Oh to be in a family with musical genius'.

perfume Patrick Suskind

Perfume - Patrick Suskind

I just finished reading Perfume for the first time. It is an amazing novel. It is such an abstract tale and it is one of those books that you pick up and are immediately transported and you don't want to put it down.

Our main character Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is in no way admirable rather the exact opposite but he is so interesting and so different it is delicious to follow his story. It would be easy and cliche to think up a story of a murderer her murders by scent. But a murderer who murders to obtain the ultimate scent is a delightful twist.

The story takes a while to reach the final act which is much shorter than parts I & II. It seems to go quicker.

The characters who interact with Grenouille are done with when Grenouille moves on from them. Suskind shortly explains how the rest of their life will be. This is a clever way of getting past one section and on to the next phase of the story without leaving us wondering if this character will come up again in the tale or what ever happend to him or her.

Suskind has taken a hard thing (basing a story on scent our language is so limited when it comes to describing scent) and has turned it into a masterfully written page turner. A definite must read!

heartbreak

what's happening to the music industry

Recent events have sent tremors through the music industry. Radiohead released their album In Rainbows without the aid of a major record label and allowed consumers to pay whatever they want for the download. Madonna, Prince and Nine Inch Nails are some other artists moving away from major record labels. What does this mean for the music industry
