Q&A with Tony Jones
June 19th 2008 01:06
Tony Jones host of Lateline and now Q&A was once described as the #1 sexy man for the intelligent woman. There seemed to be many admirers in the audience of Q&A on the 12th. The lady in front of me proclaiming "I do admire Tony Jones"
White hair and invisible frame glasses he came on to woo the crowd and make us have "the most fun we can have on a Thursday night".
Q&A was one of the best studio audiences I have been in. I have been on the new inventors, triple j radio show, Andrew Dentons Enough Rope and the Gruen Transfer.
What makes Q&A so good is that you are not just sitting their clapping madly because you don't want the camera to catch you bored, you don't have to sit through "pick ups", you don't have to sit silent for "atmosphere" sound bites, it is over and done with in 1 hour rather than several because it is live and you are actually involved.
The whole idea is that the audience asks the questions. You submit your questions and they short list them for the show. During the show you can raise your hand to make comment or quiz. Of course 1 hour is not enough time for 100 opinionated people to quiz 5 panel members about the latest issues.
I came to this realisation quite quickly after they got me all pumped to ask my question (gave me a print out and checked the cameras and boom mic) after an incessant rant on Belinda Neal that lasted nearly half the show the lady by the auto-cue camera was soon holding up placards with numbers on them. I had a hunch... that 20 possibly means 20 minutes.
Alas it did and my question was not asked or answered. Of course it got answered by many inquisitive audience members in the ladies bathroom afterwards but that doesn't change that I didn't get to pose a topical question to politicians live on air.... yes I'm a nerd....
However the whole experience was great and I will be doing it again on the 3rd of July... if you are reading this and you can get to ABC studios in Ultimo Sydney I suggest you do, Q&A really is the best fun you can have on a Thursday night.
Have you been in studio audiences? What have your experiences been?
